Student Leadership Institutes

Ithaca College hosts numerous Student Leadership Institutes (SLI's) each semester. They focus on several areas, such as Leading Self, Leading at IC, Leading Others, and Leading in a Diverse World. As a part of my participation in the Leadership Scholar Program, I participate in at least 3 SLI's per semester. 

Fall 2022 (Freshman Year)

Planning Successful Small Venue Events (9/6/22)

In this Student Leadership Seminar, I got a lot of extremely helpful information about planning events. While this information isn't directly pertinent to me now, it will absolutely help me further down the road, as i become more involved in clubs and possibly become a E-Board  member of some of those clubs.

Time Management for Better Leadership (9/9/22)

In this SLI about time management, I got lots of valuable information about how to best divide my time across lots of responsibilities. As a Music Education Major, Its normal to take 12 classes each semester - so time management is paramount. 

Authority: Who DO I Trust? (10/25/22)


In this Student Leadership Seminar, we discussed how to trust information sources you find online. Factual information can be really hard to disseminate from misinformation online, and this SLI showed me how you can disseminate that more easily. 

Spring 2023 (Freshman Year)

Challenging Assumptions - Leading Others (2/1/23)

This SLI was centered around challenging my assumptions about how the world worked, with others and in with activities. I won't share what activities we did to preserve the content of the SLI for people that take it in the future, but the results where pretty surprising! 

10 Ways To Have A Better Conversation - Leading Self (2/22/23)

This SLI was focused on ways to make better conversation, in professional and personal settings. Tips centered around the themes of keeping the conversation mutual and not focusing too much one one party over the other, sticking to the big picture as much as possible, avoiding pontification, and more. 

Leading vs. Managing - What's the difference?! A LOT!! - Leading Others (3/28/23)

In this SLI we discussed the difference between managers and leaders. Leaders show a group how to succeed, and lead them to that point. Managers tell people what to do, by some decree of authority. Managers and Leaders are essential, but in different contexts. 

Fall 2023 (Sophomore Year)

Emergency Preparedness: Skills and Tips for Keeping Yourself Safe in an Emergency (9/18/2023)

This SLI, presented by the office of public safety and emergency management, discussed ways to keep the campus community safe in the event of several different types of emergencies. 

Résumés That Rock! 10 Tips to Amp Up Your Application (9/13/2023)

This SLI centered on resume writing and the do's and dont's of resumes. After this SLI I rewrote my resume with the guidelines given in the SLI.

Learning Your Leadership Style (10/26/2023)

This SLI, presented by the Office of Student Engagement showcased ways to refine your leadership style, and how to understand other's style of leadership. 

Spring 2024 (Sophomore Year)

The Mime Approach to Problem Solving (2/12/24)

Related mime to problem solving and leadership. Relating mime body language to body language that is best used when leading.

Eboard Transitions (3/7/24)

Discussed best practice and procedure for E-board turnover, and methods to keep essential functions moving.

The Contract Process (4/22/24)

This SLI walked us through the process of submitting a guest artist contract. This is helpful for next year, as my organization plans to bring in a guest artist. 

Fall 2024 (Junior Year)

The Recognition Process and Tips & Tricks with IC Engage (9/5/2024)

Learned how to fully use IC Enagage for my student org. Created the Jazz Club's first event on engage.

Got a Wicked Problem? First, Tell Me How You Make Toast (9/11/24)

Discussed best practices about group problem solving, and how visualization is helpful for making sense of complex problems. 

Get it Together (10/2/24)

Discussed best ways to communicate about specifics, and how to tackle complex problems as a group.

Spring 2025 (Junior Year)

Goal Setting for Your Student Org (2/14/2025)

Talked about goal setting for the future of the Org and created a vision board for the future of the org

Social Media Strategies & Branding Techniques to Increase Your Reach (2/19/25)

Talked about ways to consilidate a brand and present a unified brand though social media.

Finance Forward (2/25/25)

Talked about how to train a new treasurer and frequently asked questions about the funding process.
